Elbow Blisters

That’d make a great band name, don’t ya think? Elbow Blisters.

You get them when you spend a lot of time at the table… literally. For the last six months I have been a full-time consultant.  For some of that, I have had the fortune of being paid, and a lot of it is quality time with smart and driven people that have ideas and ideas about ideas that they want to explore.

In class today I taught the 3 “Bs” of learning after college:

  1. Books
  2. Blogs
  3. Beer

In books, we get an in-depth study on a particular topic or strategy. In blogs, we get a constant pulse on trends and emerging technologies, and over beer, we learn from our peers. We discuss common topics. We share discoveries and opinions. And we help each other out. There is a never-ending stream of referrals and favors traded. And that’s the way things are done, at least here in Nashville.

I actually have elbow blisters! I was going to feature a photo, but I’ll save you the explicit details. (Just imagine the most attractive elbow you’ve ever seen, but with a blister on it.)

I wish elbow blisters on everyone reading this. You may not have the great fortune to teach and mentor for a living, but some time at the table is a rejuvenating exercise, not to mention a great way to build long-term relationships. Every one of my current projects came from people I knew prior to doing business with them. No pain, no gain.

Blisters. Go’n get’cha some.
