A New Semester Approacheth

My First Class, fall 2008

It’s that time of year again, when a fresh batch of students shuffle into unfamiliar classrooms wide-eyed and wondering what this semester will have in store for them.  The first day of EIS 2350 is always a strange one for me.  Still buzzing from the crescendo of the prior semester’s completion, I burst onstage with all the fire and energy  that comes from loving what I do and knowing that a few of these students will really take hold of the concepts we cover in class… only to hear my voice bouncing off the back wall. Blank stares greet me, and my old friends from semesters past are nowhere to be found.  And the cycle of inspiring a new generation of students begins again.

It always takes a few sessions to build momentum.  First, they’ll hear about my struggles with school as a young person, my starving-artist years and the tribulations of being a new media evangelist in the backwoods town that Nashville was, digitally speaking, around the turn of the century (boy, that’s a scary way to put it).  I’ll talk about the fateful call from Belmont that led to this very moment, and what I hope to inspire in each of these students by semester’s end.

We will also cover the history of technology in the entertainment industry, but soon, we’ll get into BRAND – and boy, do we have some doozies this year.  The fall of Tiger Woods.  The NBC/Conan/Jay Leno debacle.  Michael Phelps and his infamous bong rips.  Oh, the fun we’ll have.  I’m really looking forward to it.

And perhaps most of all, I can’t wait to play with the new toys I’ve purchased just for this occasion.  A sweet new HD video camera, capturing every moment in zeroes and ones.  A new MacBook Pro to assemble and display each class presentation.  And this very website, a new hub for bringing all of this information and more into digital form.

It’s an exciting moment.  I can’t wait to share the experience with YOU here on PinkyGonzales.com.  Welcome aboard.

  1. You’re hilarious, and your site rocks. Is that kid in the front row taking notes or checking Facebook on his miniMac?

  2. Well thank you very much! That kid is indeed rocking an original MacBook. When this photo was taken, he was probably checking out his MySpace account (ah, the good old days). Digital photography has come quite a ways since 2008 too, as you can tell.
